St. Regis vs Ritz-Carlton: Which Marriott Luxury Brand Is Better?

Marriott's two luxury flagships look alike on a booking screen and feel nothing alike in person. Here is how they differ, and which to book where.

St. Regis vs Ritz-Carlton: Which Marriott Luxury Brand Is Better?

St. Regis and Ritz-Carlton are Marriott's two classic luxury flags, they often share a city, and they price within a few hundred dollars of each other almost everywhere. They are not the same product. St. Regis is the smaller, more ceremonial brand: 68 hotels descended from John Jacob Astor IV's 1904 New York landmark, with a butler for every room and a set of rituals (a champagne sabrage at dusk, afternoon tea, the house Bloody Mary) that make a stay feel like an occasion. Ritz-Carlton is the larger, more systematic one: 127 hotels including the nine Ritz-Carlton Reserves, famous for its club floors, family resorts and a service culture engineered for consistency.

The short verdict: St. Regis for a special trip, a couple or a city you want to feel grand; Ritz-Carlton for families, longer stays and the cities and resorts St. Regis doesn't reach. Elite members have an extra reason to lean St. Regis, because Marriott's breakfast benefit applies there and not at Ritz-Carlton. The detail, and the city-by-city calls, below; each brand has its own full guide (St. Regis, Ritz-Carlton).

The Short Answers

  • St. Regis is the more exclusive and ceremonial brand (68 hotels, a butler for every room); Ritz-Carlton is bigger and more consistent (127 hotels, club floors, family resorts).
  • For Marriott elites, St. Regis wins outright: Platinum members can take daily breakfast for two as their welcome gift there, while at Ritz-Carlton the gift is 1,000 points. Neither brand offers elite lounge access.
  • Ritz-Carlton has the ultra-luxury tier St. Regis lacks: nine Ritz-Carlton Reserve resorts from Phulay Bay to Mandapa and Niseko.
  • Published entry rates overlap in most shared cities (roughly $400–1,500 a night), though on our own check several Ritz-Carltons ran higher (Central Park $1,302–2,211, Bal Harbour $1,406–2,751). Maldives awards overlap too: roughly 100,000–200,000 points at the St. Regis and 90,000–165,000 at the Ritz-Carlton.
  • Our own numbers cover Ritz-Carlton only; we have no St. Regis data yet. Across 6,200 recent guest reviews at 62 hotels, Ritz-Carlton scores 8.89 out of 10, the lowest of the eight luxury brands we scored, with Asia, the Gulf and the Reserves strong and its US hotels weak.
  • Families usually do better at Ritz-Carlton (kids' programs, connecting rooms, the club lounge as a dining room); couples and celebrations at St. Regis.
  • Book either through Marriott's STARS advisor program and you add breakfast, a $100 credit and upgrade priority at the same rate, while still earning Bonvoy points and elite nights.

Butlers vs Club Floors

The service difference is structural. At a St. Regis every room has a butler: two garments pressed on arrival, coffee or tea brought up on request, unpacking, reservations, the small errands. It is personal and it is included, and in practice it is the brand. Ritz-Carlton's equivalent is the Club Level, a lounge with its own concierge team and five food presentations a day, which you get by booking a Club room rather than by holding status. For a family the club is worth more (breakfast, snacks and early-evening drinks for everyone); for a couple the butler is the more memorable luxury.

On style, St. Regis leans grand and a little theatrical: the King Cole Bar in New York, César Ritz's Grand Hotel lobby in Rome, the Grand Canal palazzi in Venice. Ritz-Carlton leans calm and comfortable, with some spectacular exceptions (the ICC tower in Hong Kong, the Riyadh palace, the Kerry Hill villas in the Maldives). Both brands vary more than their marketing admits, so choose the hotel, not the logo, and use our city guides to do it.

Points, Status and the Booking Channel

Both brands earn and redeem Marriott Bonvoy points at dynamic prices, and both give the cheapest night free on five-night award stays. The difference is elite treatment. At St. Regis, Platinum Elite members and above can take daily breakfast for themselves and a guest as their welcome gift, at city hotels and resorts alike. At Ritz-Carlton, and at the Reserves, the welcome gift is 1,000 points, elite upgrades exclude rooms with Club access, and the Reserves skip elite upgrades altogether. Neither brand offers elite lounge access. For a Bonvoy Platinum paying cash, that alone can be worth $80–150 a day at resort prices.

The equalizer is the advisor channel. Both brands sit in Marriott's STARS program: a booking through it adds daily breakfast for two, a US$100 credit per stay, an upgrade on arrival when available and a welcome amenity at the marriott.com flexible rate, and it still earns Bonvoy points and elite night credit. Booked that way, a Ritz-Carlton stay includes breakfast after all, and the choice comes down to the hotel. Every Marriott brand by tier has the full Bonvoy rules.

The Ritz-Carlton Side, by Our Numbers

One caveat first: the numbers in this section are ours, and they cover Ritz-Carlton only. On 1 October 2026 we priced the same stays at every Ritz-Carlton we track through our own booking engine (the one behind hotels.biirdee.com) and scored the 100 most recent verified guest reviews at each hotel ourselves: the mean out of 10, the share of guests scoring 9 or more, and the share under 7. We have not run the same check on St. Regis, so there are no St. Regis scores or same-date rates to set beside these, and we won't guess at them.

Ritz-Carlton by Our Numbers

Our scoring of the 100 most recent verified reviews at each Ritz-Carlton with enough of them, and our same-dates rate check (10–13 Nov 2026, 12–15 Mar 2027, 15–18 Jul 2027), both pulled 1 October 2026. "The eight" are the luxury brands we could score: Belmond, Maybourne, The Peninsula, Mandarin Oriental, Four Seasons, Rosewood, Dorchester Collection and Ritz-Carlton.

Ritz-Carlton
Hotels and recent reviews scored62 hotels, 6,200 reviews
Mean recent guest score8.89 / 10, the lowest of the eight
Guests scoring 9 or more / under 776% / 12.3%
Forbes Five-Star hotels (2026)21 of 106 rated
Median lowest rate: Nov / Mar / Jul$615 / $663 / $676, the lowest of the eight
Breakfast for two adds (median)$74–88 a night
StrongestAsia, the Gulf and the Reserves: Phulay Bay 9.92, Bahrain 9.80, Hong Kong 9.75, Istanbul 9.74
WeakestUS hotels: Philadelphia 7.27, Bacara (Santa Barbara) 7.34, Atlanta 7.63, Kapalua (Maui) 7.66

Where the data helps this comparison is in the cities the two brands share. Among the luxury hotels we scored city by city, the Ritz-Carlton came top in Istanbul (9.74), Doha (9.56) and Riyadh (9.30), and second in Hong Kong (9.75, just behind Mandarin Oriental). Its two New York hotels are the bottom two of the seven luxury hotels we scored there (Central Park 8.06, with 26% of guests under 7, and NoMad 8.40), and it came last in San Francisco (8.78), Singapore (9.15) and Cairo (8.38); Georgetown is last in Washington (8.12, on older reviews). So in Istanbul, Doha, Riyadh and Hong Kong the Ritz-Carlton is a strong pick on its own numbers; in New York and Washington, in our view, the St. Regis deserves a hard look, though we can't yet put a number on it.

Our Ritz-Carlton rates also came in above the ranges this page quoted for New York, Washington, Miami, Mexico City and Cairo, so the Ritz-Carlton column in the city table below now shows what we measured. Every Ritz-Carlton's scores and rates are on Ritz-Carlton prices, and the full guest-score ranking on the best Ritz-Carlton hotels.

City by City: Where Both Brands Compete

Where Marriott runs both flags, and which one we book. St. Regis rates are typical published entry rates as of September 2026, matching our city guides. Which to Book, by Trip

A honeymoon or milestone: St. Regis in the city (New York, Rome, Venice, Florence) and whichever of the two has the better resort in your destination; in Bali or Thailand, look at the Reserves (Mandapa, Phulay Bay) before either. A family holiday: Ritz-Carlton, whose resorts (Naples, Laguna Niguel, Dubai's JBR beach) are built for it and whose Club Level feeds everyone; check the recent guest score first, though, because Kapalua on Maui (7.66) and Bacara in Santa Barbara (7.34) are among the brand's lowest on our numbers. A points trip: St. Regis if you hold Bonvoy Platinum or better, because breakfast is included; otherwise whichever prices better in points on your dates. A long business stay: Ritz-Carlton, for the club and the consistency.

And if the comparison you are really making is with a brand outside Marriott, our Mandarin Oriental vs Ritz-Carlton, Aman vs Ritz-Carlton and luxury hotel brands compared pages cover it.

St. Regis vs Ritz-Carlton FAQs

Is St. Regis or Ritz-Carlton more luxurious?

St. Regis is generally the more luxurious and exclusive of the two: a smaller portfolio (68 hotels), a butler for every room and a more ceremonial style. Ritz-Carlton is larger (127 hotels) and more consistent, and its Ritz-Carlton Reserve resorts sit above both brands.

Which is better for Marriott Bonvoy elites, St. Regis or Ritz-Carlton?

St. Regis. Platinum Elite members and above can choose daily breakfast for two as their welcome gift at St. Regis; at Ritz-Carlton the gift is 1,000 points, and neither brand offers elite lounge access.

Are St. Regis and Ritz-Carlton owned by the same company?

Yes. Both are Marriott International luxury brands: Ritz-Carlton since 1998, St. Regis since Marriott bought Starwood in 2016. Both earn and redeem Marriott Bonvoy points.

Which is better for families?

Usually Ritz-Carlton: its resorts are built around kids' programs and connecting rooms, and a Club Level room feeds the whole family through the day. St. Regis suits couples and celebrations better.

Which costs more, St. Regis or Ritz-Carlton?

Their published rates sit within a few hundred dollars of each other in most shared cities, typically $400–1,500 a night by city, with St. Regis a little higher more often than not. Our own check covers Ritz-Carlton only: on 1 October 2026 the median Ritz-Carlton's lowest rate was $615 a night for 10–13 November 2026, $663 for 12–15 March 2027 and $676 for 15–18 July 2027, the lowest of the eight luxury brands we priced, while the Reserves ran from $352 (Niseko in November) to $3,618 (Dorado Beach in March). We haven't run the same check on St. Regis.

Is the St. Regis Maldives or the Ritz-Carlton Maldives better?

The Ritz-Carlton Maldives, Fari Islands has the more striking design (Kerry Hill's circular villas) and a shorter speedboat transfer; The St. Regis Maldives Vommuli has the bigger island feel and, for Bonvoy Platinum members, daily breakfast included. On points they overlap: roughly 90,000–165,000 at the Ritz-Carlton and 100,000–200,000 at the St. Regis. For cash, our check found only villas on sale at the Fari Islands, from $2,793 to $3,436 a night, with nothing bookable for our 27–30 December stay.
