Rosewood vs Mandarin Oriental: An Honest Comparison
Two Hong Kong-owned dynasties, opposite temperaments: the collector of irreplaceable buildings versus the group that runs the best-oiled city hotels on earth.
By Biirdee Travel, Luxury Travel Concierge · Updated October 3, 2026

Rosewood and Mandarin Oriental overlap more than any other two brands at the top of hospitality: same Hong Kong ownership culture (Chow Tai Fook's New World behind Rosewood, Jardine Matheson behind Mandarin Oriental), same city-hotel DNA, same refusal to run a points program, and a head-to-head in at least ten cities. The temperaments could not be more different. Rosewood collects icons and lets each one be itself: the Carlyle, the Crillon, London's former US Embassy. Mandarin Oriental runs 46 hotels to one exacting standard, with the strongest spa and restaurant program of any group.
Biirdee books both at partner level (Rosewood Elite-grade benefits at one, the MO Fan Club rate at the other), so this is a working comparison rather than a brand-brochure one. On 1 October 2026 we also priced the same two stays at both brands, and at the Peninsula, in every city where they meet, and scored the most recent guest reviews at all three; the most common version of this search is the three-way one, so the Peninsula runs through the page. Heritage, spa, service, awards, then the cities where you actually get to choose.
Key Takeaways
- Rosewood is the higher-variance, higher-character bet: its icons out-personality anything MO owns; Mandarin Oriental is the higher floor, the better spa and the safer choice in a city you don't know.
- Heritage splits oddly: Rosewood is a 1979 brand that owns older buildings (Crillon 1758, Carlyle 1930); MO is the older brand (Bangkok 1876, Hong Kong 1963) with fewer ancient addresses.
- Spa: Mandarin Oriental, brand-wide, the best city-hotel spa program in the world. Rosewood's Asaya concept is ambitious and growing, not yet the category leader.
- Same nights, same booking engine: Mandarin Oriental was cheaper than Rosewood in seven of eleven shared cities in November and seven of twelve in March. Rosewood was the cheaper choice in Bangkok, London and Abu Dhabi; Mandarin Oriental in Hong Kong, Paris, Vienna, Munich, Doha and Guangzhou.
- Guests: Rosewood averaged 9.14 out of 10 across 1,400 recent reviews, Mandarin Oriental 9.21 across 3,095 and the Peninsula 9.26 across 900. The Peninsula has the fewest disappointed guests (6.1% under 7), then MO (6.9%), then Rosewood (8.8%).
- Awards split by scorecard: Rosewood Hong Kong is No.1 in The 50 Best Hotels for the second year running and Rosewood places four hotels in its top 25; Forbes gives Five Stars to 27 Mandarin Orientals, 11 Rosewoods and 8 Peninsulas.
- Neither runs points. Rosewood Elite is advisor-only; Fans of M.O. is free recognition. Partner-channel bookings add breakfast, ~$100 credit and upgrade priority at both.
- Head-to-head cities: Hong Kong, London, Paris, Bangkok, Munich, Vienna, Beijing, Guangzhou, Madrid, Abu Dhabi, Doha and New York. Rosewood wins the icons; MO wins the spas and Bangkok.

What the Three-Way Scorecard Says
Each brand wins a different column, and together they explain the choice better than any adjective. The Peninsula wins the floor: the highest mean score and the fewest disappointed guests, from twelve owned hotels with no weak entries. Mandarin Oriental wins the inspectors and the spa: two-thirds of its Forbes-rated hotels are Five-Star, it has more Five-Star spas than the other two combined, and its reviews score higher when guests mention the spa. Rosewood wins the peaks: four hotels in the top 25 of The 50 Best Hotels, including the world No.1 two years running, and the highest share of couples, which is what a design-led, scene-making brand attracts.
One number deserves a second look. At Rosewood, the reviews that mention the spa score lower than the ones that don't (8.78 against 9.02), the reverse of both rivals. That is consistent with what we hear from clients: Rosewood's Asaya and Sense spas are good, but the spa is rarely why people choose Rosewood. Note also how the scorecards disagree about Rosewood Hong Kong: The 50 Best Hotels' No.1 in the world, and Michelin's only Three-Key hotel in the city, is merely "Recommended" by Forbes, whose inspectors reward polish and procedure over personality.
Heritage: Old Brand, Young Brand, and Older Buildings
Mandarin Oriental is the older name by a century. The Oriental in Bangkok opened in 1876 and turns 150 in 2026; the Mandarin in Hong Kong (1963) defined the Asian city hotel, and the merged group has carried that fan logo onto the 1910 Ritz in Madrid, the Lutetia in Paris and the 1838 Savoy in Zurich. Rosewood was founded in Dallas in 1979 with the Mansion on Turtle Creek and spent its first decades as a small American collection.
Yet Rosewood now holds more genuinely historic buildings than its rival. The Hôtel de Crillon (1758) sits on the Place de la Concorde with official French Palace status; the Carlyle (1930) is Manhattan royalty in hotel form; the Chancery occupies Eero Saarinen's former US Embassy on Grosvenor Square; Rosewood Amsterdam is the Palace of Justice; Schloss Fuschl is a lakeside castle. So the honest heritage verdict is split: the older institution is Mandarin Oriental, but the more storied buildings, hotel for hotel, are Rosewood's.
Spa and Wellness: Mandarin Oriental, Clearly
This is the least contested category. Mandarin Oriental's spas are the reason many guests choose the brand; the Oriental Spa in Bangkok has its own building across the river, Hyde Park London and the Landmark Hong Kong run programs locals book into, and the consistency across 46 hotels is unmatched by any group. If a stay is being planned around treatments, thermal circuits and a serious wellness menu, MO is the answer in almost every city.
Rosewood's answer is Asaya, an "integrative wellness" concept that treats the spa as a community space: strongest at Rosewood Hong Kong, Rosewood Phuket and the newer resorts. It is ambitious and improving, and individual Asaya facilities are excellent, but it is not yet the category leader: Forbes rates two Rosewood spas Five-Star in 2026 (both Sense spas, at Mayakoba and Miramar Beach) against Mandarin Oriental's 13, and in our review data the spa comes up in 6% of Rosewood reviews against 10% at MO. The three-way people ask us about, Mandarin Oriental vs Rosewood vs Chiva-Som, resolves the same way: Chiva-Som in Hua Hin for a structured, medical-grade retreat where wellness is the entire trip; Mandarin Oriental Bangkok for the best spa attached to a great city hotel; Rosewood Phuket for villa privacy with a good spa on the side.
Service, Awards and Consistency
Mandarin Oriental's service is the more systematized and, hotel for hotel, the more reliable: warm, precise, Asian in grammar even in Munich or Geneva. Rosewood personalizes residentially (fewer scripts, more latitude for individual staff), and at its flagships (Hong Kong, the Carlyle, the Crillon) that produces service with genuine personality. Across 42 hotels the floor is lower than MO's across 46, a theme that runs through every Rosewood comparison, including Rosewood vs Four Seasons.
On awards the split is by scorecard, and the 2026 results make it unusually clear. Forbes Travel Guide rates 27 Mandarin Orientals Five-Star against 11 Rosewoods (the Crillon, Rosewood London and Villa Magna among them; the Carlyle is Four-Star). The 50 Best Hotels, voted by an international panel, goes the other way: Rosewood Hong Kong is No.1 for the second year running, São Paulo No.6, the Crillon No.14 and Las Ventanas No.25, against Mandarin Oriental Qianmen at No.7 and Bangkok at No.10. Michelin's 2026 Keys reach 39 Rosewoods (six with Three Keys). Group-wide consistency: MO. Individual peaks: Rosewood.

The closest fight in either portfolio. |
| London | Rosewood London in Holborn ($948 / $774; 8.73) and the all-suite Chancery in Mayfair (2025) | Hyde Park in Knightsbridge ($1,135 / $1,032; 9.12) and the 50-key Mayfair (2024) | MO Hyde Park for the park, the spa and Dinner by Heston; Rosewood London on price; the Chancery for the newest hardware in town. |

| Munich | Rosewood Munich: the city's first true palace hotel in decades; $1,342 with breakfast / $922; 8.95 | Mandarin Oriental, Munich: rooftop pool with Frauenkirche views; $1,068 / $743; 9.02 | Rosewood for scale and newness; MO for the rooftop, the neighborhood and the lower rate. |

| Beijing | Rosewood Beijing: the brand's 2014 Asia debut in Chaoyang; $407 on both dates; 8.83 † | Wangfujing (penthouse over the Forbidden City; $840 in March; 9.85) and Qianmen (hutong courtyards, 2024; No.7 in The 50 Best Hotels 2026) | MO for Wangfujing's view and Qianmen's courtyards; Rosewood for the bigger, more social hotel at half the price. |
| Madrid | Rosewood Villa Magna on the Castellana; $830 / $1,173; 8.97 | Mandarin Oriental Ritz: the 1910 Ritz, Moneo-restored; $1,459 / $890; 9.35 | The Ritz, and its guests agree. Villa Magna is the quieter, business-district alternative. |
| Abu Dhabi & Doha | Rosewood Abu Dhabi (Al Maryah Island; $517 / $263); Rosewood Doha (Lusail, January 2026; $295 / $353) | Emirates Palace Mandarin Oriental ($716 / $730 with breakfast); Mandarin Oriental, Doha in Msheireb ($269 / $244; 9.50) | Emirates Palace for the spectacle and beach; MO Doha for design, guest scores and price; Rosewood Doha for the newest towers. |
| New York | The Carlyle: Bemelmans, Café Carlyle, the Upper East Side; $2,104 / $839; 9.32 | Mandarin Oriental, New York: park views from the 38th floor at Columbus Circle; $1,378 / $846; 8.78 | The Carlyle, and its guests agree. Nobody reminisces about a great view; everybody remembers Bemelmans at midnight. |
Adding Peninsula: Mandarin Oriental vs Rosewood vs Peninsula
The three-way version adds the Peninsula, and it clarifies rather than complicates. Peninsula and Mandarin Oriental are the same species (Hong Kong-born, spa-and-dining led, no points), and differ on strategy: Peninsula owns its twelve hotels outright with no weak entries; MO manages nearly four times as many with more variance. Rosewood is the outlier in this trio, the design-led icon collector. All three meet in six cities, and on our numbers the best-reviewed hotel splits them: Mandarin Oriental in Hong Kong, Bangkok and Beijing, the Peninsula in London and Paris, and Rosewood's Carlyle in New York.
The pairwise deep dives: Peninsula vs Mandarin Oriental for the two dynasties, Aman vs Mandarin Oriental if a resort brand is in the mix, and Aman vs Rosewood for the sanctuary-versus-scene question. All five brands sit side by side in luxury hotel brands compared.

Rosewood vs Mandarin Oriental FAQs
Is Rosewood better than Mandarin Oriental?
At its peaks, yes: Rosewood Hong Kong, the Crillon and the Carlyle out-personality anything Mandarin Oriental owns. Across whole portfolios Mandarin Oriental has the higher floor, the better spa program and the stronger Asia bench. Icons and design: Rosewood. Reliability, spas and Bangkok: Mandarin Oriental.
Which has the better spa, Rosewood or Mandarin Oriental?
